Drop Bear - Bonfire Stout

A beer inspired jointly by traditional Irish stout and rauchbier (smoked German beer). Drop Bear only produce non-alcoholic beers and (currently) have only a small range; but is clearly a brewery that likes to experiment. This one is both vegan and gluten-free. The recipe involves seven different types of grain and Chinook hops. A modest pale brown head sits atop a deep red/black body. Wood smoke fragrance is immediately apparent on the nose, together with liquorice and cocoa. The body feels silky smooth as the carefully balanced flavours reveal themselves - roasted malt, black coffee and dark chocolate. The smokiness lingers in the aftertaste but it is not overpowering in the dry finish. A complex beer which succeeds in every way.
