Rothaus is a brewery based in the Black Forest in Germany. This pilsner has an ABV of 0.4 %, which is brought about through a process of dealcoholisation of the alcoholic version. Tannenzapfle abides by the Reinheitsgebot, the 1516 German beer regulations which means that it contains only malts and hops and so is suitable for a vegan diet. It arrives in a 330 ml bottle and when poured quickly loses its modest head, leaving a very flat looking pilsner. The aroma is quite floral and a little bread-like. In the mouth the body is disappointingly thin and the carbonation level is modest. Caramel, lemongrass and green tea appear in my notes at this point, with just a touch of black pepper. Strangely, for a pilsner, its overall character doesn't make for a very refreshing drink. It's pleasant enough but is perhaps best enjoyed with a meal.
