Mikkeller - Henry and His Science
Mikkeller have grown from being a small experimental Danish company to one operating in 40+ countries, including two breweries in the USA. But despite this, the penchant for experimentation remains, not least with the names of the beers. Henry (as we shall call him) is intended as a promotion of the flavour derived from the yeast, rather than from (the traditional) malt and hops. It is brewed in Belgium by De Proefbrouwerij, continuing with the Mikkeller ethos of outsourcing the brewing process (known as "cuckoo" or "gypsy" brewing companies). The beer is an extremely pale ale and has a decent white frothy head. On the nose, it is distinctly sour and citrussy (especially grapefruit) and this continues on strongly through into the taste. With the near absence of malt or hop characteristics, Henry seems to be moving to the margins of what constitutes a "beer." Experimental, certainly.
