Mash Gang - California Uncommon

This London-based brewery has gone for a less well represented style of beer in the UK AF market - a malt liquor. It comes in a psychedelia-themed 500 ml can - I feel more AF beers should be offered in 500 ml form. If I like a beer I want more of it, not less! A malt liquor is traditionally a high alcohol, low hop "American lager." The ingredients in this vegan AF version include pilsner and honey malts, wheat, oats and chili pepper. The hops are Tettnanger and Northern Brewer. There is not much of an aroma to the beer, maybe a touch of maltiness but nothing too prominent. The taste is very restrained - cereals, caramel and maybe herb (mint?). I couldn't detect any chili pepper. It has an extremely thin and watery mouthfeel and the finish is not distinctive. California Uncommon is a refreshing drink and easy to quaff but my first experience of a malt liquor has not been too thrilling.
