A pastry stout is one in which the adjuncts are especially highlighted and often using ones that might be found in a dessert. This particular one from the Yorkshire brewery contains a whopping 10% cherry in the ingredients, as well as lactose and maltodextrin. Oh yes and malt and hops. It is an unfiltered <0.5% ABV beer dispensed from a 440ml can. The thick creamy head sits atop an impressively dark body and exudes a roasted malt and coffee aroma. The taste, unsurprisingly, is mostly of cherry and is quite sour. It has a moderately firm mouthfeel and carbonation level. The black cherry follows through to give a sharp finish. It is certainly an unusual stout - after the initial aroma it seems to be closer to a kriek than a stout.
